Creating the Environment

Now that we have the game play pretty much sorted we are focussing more on the environment of the game. We want to make it exciting and stimulating for he children, using colour, texture, sound and imagery to further engage them in the experience. We want something that will support the themes of the game and set the scene, without blocking the grid and hindering the game play.

We came up with the idea of creating a sea canopy over the grid. By hanging things over the grid it creates a great immersive visual and kinetic environment, whilst leaving the floor space clear for the game play.

We are planning on using an inexpensive gazebo to create this canopy ($30 from Bunnings or The Warehouse) and hanging hand made decorations from it. For these decorations we are planning on making a number of large plastic bag jellyfish to create a jellyfish forrest. Other decorations may include fish, seaweed and other sea creatures which could be made from any variety of things such as plastic, cardboard, paper or fabric.

Another thought we had was how it would be cool to light this with a black light (As an option for the indoor version). It would create a fun yet eerie environment of glowing, ghostly jellyfish that would be something different and exciting for the kids.

We have also been considering ways of creating the grid used for the game. Currently we have been using tape to draw it however this is time consuming, costly (when having to repeatedly make new grids with more tape), and can only been done inside. Other options we have considered are: sewing a grid out of tapes of fabric,  making a fabric mat, a tarpaulin either painted with a grid or taped up to be reused.

Visual ideas for a Storybook

26 April 2017

We want to make the book and the game space match each other and make it child friendly. We think creating a book to print out by the KCO's (we will probably make a fancy version for our presentation anyways!). Hence I looked into different illustrative styles and how we could create a child story book that carries the narrative while still be a manual for the game.

Week 7 Class

26 April 2017

Today we have a talk about who could contribute what into this project. We also brainstormed potential ideas how we could make the game space more visual.

Bryony has sketched out a Gazebo that could add in the important visual narrative into the game that was missing so far. It would determine a magic circle and spikes the imagination of children as it seems like they are in an ocean environment surrounded by sealife and water.

Audio might also be an option but we have to test that one out yet.

Navin has started illustrating some sealife creatures that we could maybe use for cards.

Week 6 Class

5 April 2017

Today we had our presentation,

Generally we need to start developing the visual style of the game. This could be cards, a booklet, costumes (could be even just a cardboard mask?) to bring narrative further into the main game.

Interim Presentation Feedback
  • ·      Call it a ‘Memory Maze’- is much clearer how the came is played and helps greatly with initial understanding.
  • ·      Loved the icebreaker. How might it be even further linked into the gameplay?
  • ·      How might bystanders be engaged further? Kids and parents. Could kids run in and be sea turtles/birds/wind when players go off route?
  • ·      Augmented reality is maybe not feasible for the scale of this project and also KCC parents may not have/want their kids on phones.
  • ·      Plastic bags aren’t predictable; they blow in the wind and go off course. Could the maze possibly change at some point in the game? The route flipped? Or rotated?

Rules For Our Game

  1. Work together to remember the correct pathway towards the other side.
  2. The narrator is the only one with the correct route through the grid.
  3. Take one step at a time through the grid.
  4. If you go on the wrong track the narrator will tell you the bad outcomes of going of track and to head back to the start with your jelly fish.
  5. The next team member will start through the grid.
  6. Everyone has to get their jellyfish through to the other side to recycle the plastic bag correctly.
